Diamond Information
Diamonds are form with 4 main characteristics or 4 C’s.
Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat (weight).
Cut
The diamond’s cut is refers to how well- proportioned the dimensions of a diamond are, and how the facets and surfaces are positioned to create sparkle, light and brilliance. An expertly cut diamond will reflect light internally like a mirror, dispersing the sparkle through its surface or in industry called Table.
To create a perfect angles and excellent proportion in a diamond an expertise, knowledge and skill is required. According to GIA grading standards the cut of diamond is scaled from Excellent cut to Poor, and the cut determines it’s potential and in some cases price of the diamond.
Colour
Colour is a natural element in diamond. According to GIA diamonds colour ranges from D (Colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The more yellow/brown the tint of colour the less the sparkle of the diamond because the light reflection is reduced. The colour of the diamond is determined with the white background reflecting white warm daylight onto the diamond face down.
D colour diamond is highest grade and extremely rare hence demands high value money can buy.
Clarity
Clarity refers to a diamond’s natural inclusions. All natural diamonds contains internal features, which is created due to millions of years of extreme pressure and heat deep within the earth surface. The internal features within the diamond are traces of minerals and uncrystallised carbon, which are inclusions. Even though they are invisible to naked eye the way they are positioned within the diamond it effects the way light is dispersed, which is why their shape, size and position is taken into account when grading the diamond.
Diamonds with few of this inclusions are deemed to have higher clarity IF (Internally and externally flawless) to I.
Carat
Carat is a measurement of weight with 1-carat diamond equals to 200 milligram. It is globally recognised standard for the weight of diamond (not to be confused with karat, a measure of gold purity). A skilled diamond cutter’s priority is to maximise the carat weight. The larger the diamond, the rare and therefore more expensive it would be. Diamonds are weighed very precisely to the nearest 0.01ct. A carat is the weight, so diamond measurements in millimetres can vary depending on how it’s cut. Always choose diamonds, which are cut well. This means their measurements are larger, making them look well spread and larger than their carat weight.
